Palagruža [ ˈpalaˈgruːʒa ] (from the Greek πέλαγος , the sea, Italian Pelagosa ) is an uninhabited small group of islands belonging to Croatia ( Vela Palagruža, Mala Palagruža, Kamik od Tramuntane, Kamik od Oštra and Galijula ) in the Adriatic Sea .
nature
The main island Vela Palagruža ( "Greater Palagruža" ) is 1,400 m long and 300 m wide and has Mediterranean vegetation . Finds from the Stone Age were uncovered on the main island . The islands are a nature reserve with many native plants and animals. They are the most distant Adriatic islands from the mainland and are 124 km south of Split and 168 km east of Pescara, Italy . An important manned lighthouse has been located on a 90 m high mountain on the main island since 1875 .
Due to its maritime location, Palagruža has an unusual climate for Croatia. It is not a typical Mediterranean climate , but rather subtropical because of its unusually mild winters and hot summers. The climate and vegetation are similar to those of the south of the island of Crete , Gibraltar and even parts of North Africa . The flora is therefore different from that in the rest of Dalmatia .
history
The island belonged to Austria-Hungary until 1918 . On July 11, 1915, it was captured by Italy, but two days later it was shot at by the destroyer SMS Tatra . Countermeasures by the Austrian Navy resulted in the sinking of the armored cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi by the U- 4 submarine under the command of Rudolf Singule on July 18 . As a result, the Austrian Navy tried unsuccessfully on July 28. the reconquest, which then succeeded on August 17, 1915. The Italian submarine RN Neride was also sunk by the submarine U 5 under the command of Georg Ludwig von Trapp . The island was ceded to Italy at the end of the war and ceded by Italy to Yugoslavia in accordance with Article 11 of the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty.
