Susak ( Italian : Sansego) is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea . It is located southwest of the island of Lošinj and south of Istria and is part of the Kvarner Bay .

geography

Susak is a gently undulating island, the area is 3.7 km². The size of the island is a maximum of 3 km × 1.5 km. The highest point on the island is the 96 m high Garba, on which there is a lighthouse . The island consists of a limestone base, overlaid by sandy loam, and is mostly overgrown with reeds , blackberries , jasmine and vines . As a result, the island appears very green (even in summer) and this flora clearly stands out from the neighboring islands (e.g. Unije and Ilovik ). A shallow sandy bay (Bok) is located southeast of the only settlement on the island.

Settlement history and culture

The only settlement on the island is the place of the same name Susak with about 200 inhabitants and is located in a bay in the northeast. The place is divided into the districts Gornje Selo (Oberdorf) and Donje Selo (Unterdorf). The inhabitants of the island live primarily from tourism, viticulture and fishing. Agriculture is of secondary importance, primarily for personal needs such as sheep breeding , cultivation of olives and figs . The island is important for ethnologists . Due to the isolation of the island, an old Croatian dialect has been preserved in the population . The shape of the costumes of the islanders is also considered to be a special cultural value, as it is one of the very few costumes in Europe where the skirt ends above the knee.

During the communist era, many of Susak's residents emigrated to the United States.

Attractions

In the church consecrated to St. Nicholas (in Gornje Selo) from the 11th century there is a large crucifix called "Great God" from the 12th century. According to legend , the wooden crucifix was first washed up on the island, after which it was brought to the church. Since then, this can no longer be taken out, because the cross suddenly no longer fits through the door through which it was brought in, although nothing has been changed on the door.

The lighthouse is on the top of Garba. In prehistory there was a fortification at this point, later an observation post. It is one of the largest and most important lighthouses in the area.

There are two ancient shipwrecks off the coast of the island , which can be viewed while diving. One ship carried machined stone pillars and building materials, while the other carried roof tiles.

The former fish processing factory is not far from the port . In 1939 it was built by a company from Venice . 150 workers processed several tons of fish there every day. The factory was closed in 1964 and the building was demolished in 1982. The former administration building is still preserved. There is now a small supermarket on the site of the factory .

traffic

Except for a few tractors, the island is car-free. Oberdorf and Unterdorf are connected by three concrete stairs, tractors can reach the Oberdorf on a longer, more level, now concrete route.

A passenger catamaran sails from Rijeka every day except Tuesdays (as of summer 2014) , the liner "Premuda" sails daily from Mali Lošinj .
