Croatian apoxyomenos
The so-called Apoxyomenos from Croatia ( Croatian: Hrvatski Apoksiomen , Greek ἀποξυόμενος ) or athlete from Lošinj is an ancient bronze statue of Apoxyomenos , which was discovered in 1996 at a depth of 45 m in the sea near Lošinj , Croatia , and recovered in 1999 has been. The statue is almost completely preserved and shows a Greek athlete who scrapes dust, oil and sweat from his skin with the help of a strigilis after training or a competition .
The Croatian Adriatic coast was built from the sixth century BC. Ruled by several Greek colonies until late antiquity in the fifth century AD . Today's Croatian cities and islands Trogir (Greek Tragurion), Vis (Greek Issa), Korčula (Greek Korkyra) u. a. m. were Greek colonies and settlements. The athlete from Lošinj is a testament to Greek culture on the eastern Adriatic coast. The bronze analysis showed a high lead content, as it was for the end of the fourth and beginning of the third century BC. Is characteristic.
The statue was restored in cooperation with the Hrvatski restauratorski zavod in Zagreb and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence until 2006 and then exhibited in Zagreb, Rijeka , Osijek , Split , Zadar and Florence. From November 2012 to February 2013 it was shown on the occasion of the Croatian Culture Festival in the Louvre in Paris . After the restoration of the Kvarner Palace in Mali Losinj, the statue was given its own museum near where it was found off the island of Losinj. A replica in a simulated find situation can be seen in the Kula Museum in Veli Lošinj .
