Novalja [ ˈnɔʋâʎâ ] (dt. Obsolete: Navala ) is the second largest city on the island of Pag , which lies between Rijeka and Zadar in the Croatian Adriatic . According to the city administration, the city has about 3,500 inhabitants and belongs to the Lika-Senj County . It describes itself as the tourist center of the island.

Attractions

One of the historical features of this small island town is the Roman aqueduct from the 1st century, which measures over 1 kilometer in length. There are also remains of three early Christian basilicas from the 4th century in the city. For people looking for relaxation, the numerous pebble beaches of the place are certainly of interest.

In 1999, about 5 km east of Novalja, a special rock formation in the shape of a triangle with sides of 22 or 32 m was rediscovered. This “Pag triangle” (Croatian: “Paški trokut”) is known as the landing site of a UFO. Local fishermen, on the other hand, report on an old meeting place, which was chosen to be exposed because of its breathtaking view of the island, the Pag Canal and the nearby Velebit Mountains.

About 2 km north of Novalja is Stara Novalja [in German "Old Novalja"] in an elongated bay that is open to the northwest and points towards Rab . Until 1970 only fishermen and winegrowers lived here. Since then tourism has increased steadily. At the northern end of the bay is the place Drljanda with a ferry port, which is only used when the bura (also called bora ) is strong . There are several freshwater springs on the seabed.

Novalja's city beach is called "Lokunje". On the eastern beach "Caska" are the ruins of a former Roman settlement, which was destroyed in an earthquake in the 4th century and sank under water. The best known and most popular beach on Pag is the pebble beach " Zrće ", located approx. 3 km southeast of Novalja , which attracts thousands of party-loving young people from all over Europe in the summer months due to its attractive open air clubs. Zrće is connected by public transport during the season. There are also numerous other bays and beaches in the Novalja area, including the "Ručica" beach in Metajna , the "Veli Žal" beach in Zubovići, and the "Straško" beach south of Novalja.
