Agron

Agron's realm

Agron was an Illyrian king in the Hellenistic era . His empire included large parts of Illyria (roughly today's Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro and southern Dalmatia) as well as parts of Epirus and the island of Corfu . He succeeded his father Pleuratos in rule and ruled from 250 to 230 BC. Chr.

During the reign of Agron, the Illyrians were at the height of their power. Their army and navy were an important regional power factor in the Balkans and the southern Adriatic. The Illyrian empire, however, was a relatively unstable structure, a confederation of different tribal dominions over which Agron could only claim a certain suzerainty.

Agron suppressed the Greek coastal cities. The Greeks of the Dalmatian island of Issa therefore asked the Romans in 231 or 230 for help against the Illyrian king. A Roman intervention, first diplomatically then militarily, did not take place until after Agron's death.

231 BC BC Demetrios II of Macedonia asked Agron for an alliance against the Aetolian League and the Illyrian troops were actually able to defeat the Aetolians. Agron took over at the victory celebrations; he died as a result of excessive wine consumption. His underage son Pinnes was the official successor, but he never actually took over the rule. His mother, Queen Teuta, ruled for him .
