In 2004, Lu became the first Taiwanese ever to make it into the top 100 of the ATP world rankings due to good performance at Challenger tournaments in the first half of the year. In the same year he also had his first win against a top 10 player at the tournament at the Queen's Club , when he defeated the Argentine Guillermo Coria .
After another Challenger title in Farg'ona and an ATP title in doubles at Rainer Schüttler's side in Chennai in the first half of 2005, Lu was unable to continue his success due to an injury.
2006 Lu reached a number of semifinals in various Challenger tournaments. In Rimouski he lost in the final against his friend Kristian Pless from Denmark, two weeks later he won the tournament in Caloundra when he defeated Peter Luczak .
2007 in Memphis Lu reached a quarter-finals for the first time at an ATP tournament when he beat the Austrian Jürgen Melzer in the second round . In 2008 Lu won three Challenger tournaments in Waikoloa , New Delhi and Tashkent . In San José he again reached a quarter-finals at ATP level, but lost here against Radek Štěpánek . At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Lu defeated the favored Brit Andy Murray in two sets (7: 6, 6: 4) in the first round, in the second round he also defeated the Argentine Agustín Calleri , but was eliminated in the third round by Jürgen Melzer out.
In January 2009 Lu made the leap into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open for the first time , on the way there he defeated the Argentinian David Nalbandian, who was in tenth place, in five sets. In the further course of the year Lu won two Challenger titles in Ramat hascharon and Chuncheon , but could not record any major successes at the ATP level.
The year 2010 began with a quarter-finals participation at the ATP tournament in Johannesburg and two successful qualifications and first round victories at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami . In June 2010, Lu marched through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon , defeating last year's finalist Andy Roddick , among others . Against Novak Đoković , however, he had no chance in three sets. After this success, Lu was listed in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time.
