Special Exempt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Special Exempt is a rule for admission to tournaments in professional tennis .

A player can be selected for a special exempt for a tournament for which, due to his world ranking position, he was not directly admitted to the main field of a tournament, but only for the qualification. The special exempt gives the player a place in the main field of the tournament without having to play the qualifying games.

The prerequisite for a special exempt is that the player is still in the main draw of a so-called 'qualified tournament' that started the week before at the time of the start of the qualification games. This is usually the case once the semifinals of the tournament started the previous week have been reached.

There are different requirements for the 'qualified tournament' depending on the tournament category and the organizing association. For tournaments as part of the ATP Tour for professional men's tennis players, it is required that the 'qualified tournament' is the same or a tournament category below the tournament for which the Special Exempt is requested. In professional women's tennis tournaments supervised by the Women's Tennis Association, it is required that the 'qualifying tournament' belongs to at least the same tournament category as the tournament for which the Special Exempt is being requested.
