Moyá began his professional career in 1995. In the same year he won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires . Moyá reached his first final in a Grand Slam tournament in 1997 at the Australian Open . On the way there he beat Boris Becker and Michael Chang , among others . In the final he was then defeated by the then world number one Pete Sampras . In the same year Moyá reached the semifinals of the ATP World Cup in Hanover, where he was able to defeat Sampras in the preliminary round this time. In the semifinals he was then defeated by Yevgeny Kafelnikow .
In 1998 Moyá won his only Grand Slam title at the French Open . He also reached the final of the ATP World Cup, where he was defeated by Àlex Corretja . On March 15, 1999, Moyá was number 1 in the world. He held the top position in the world rankings for two weeks.
After two weaker years, Moyá won the Masters in Cincinnati in 2002 and qualified for the Masters Cup in Shanghai. There he reached the semi-finals, in which he was defeated by Juan Carlos Ferrero . In 2004 he won the Masters tournament in Rome . In 2007 Moyá reached the quarter-finals of the French Open, but then lost to Rafael Nadal 4: 6, 3: 6 and 0: 6. At the end of July he won the Umag tournament.
In April 2009, Moyá had an operation on his hip after an injury, after which he had to take a break for several months. At the beginning of 2010 he returned to the ATP Tour, but mostly failed in the first round. Among other things, he was defeated by the German Benjamin Becker at the Madrid Masters with 0: 6 and 2: 6. This match in May 2010 should be his last on the tour. In November 2010, Moyá announced his retirement from professional tennis due to persistent foot problems. He was officially bid farewell at the 2010 ATP World Tour Finals in London.
He has been with Rafael Nadal's coaching team since 2017 and, after Toni Nadal's retirement, his main coach since 2018.
Style of play
Moyá had a very hard impact with up to 218 km / h . In competition he tried mainly to use his strong forehand. He played the backhand with both hands. He was particularly successful on clay courts. Although he is left-handed, he played tennis with his right hand.
