Estoril Open 2000 / Men

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Estoril Open 2000 was the 11th edition of the local tennis clay court tournament . The tournament was part of the male ATP series as an International Series tournament and part of the female WTA tour as a Tier IV tournament . It took place from April 10th to 16th at the same time as the two men's tournaments Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca and the Gallerfurniture.com Challenge in Atlanta as well as the women's tournament in Amelia Island , the Bausch & Lomb Championships . The prize money for the men's competition was $ 600,000 for both singles and doubles and $ 140,000 for both women's competitions. There were 32 players against each other in both women and men, and 16 pairings in doubles.

The men's individual tournament was won by the Spaniard Carlos Moyá , who had entered as a wild card owner, replacing his compatriot Albert Costa as the title holder. Costa lost in fifth place in the opening round. For Johansson it was the only title this season and the sixth of his career.

In the women's category, the top seeded German Anke Huber succeeded the Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik as the individual winner. It was Huber's first title of the season and the 11th individual success of her career.

The defending champion Srebotnik did not compete in the singles this year, but was able to win the doubles competition with her partner Tina Križan and thus succeed the two Spaniards Alicia Ortuno and Cristina Torrens Valero . For the two Slovenians it was the only double success of the season, but already their fourth joint title overall.

In the men's doubles, Tomás Carbonell and Donald Johnson were the defending champions. Johnson competed this time with Piet Norval . Together they were able to prevail in the final against David Adams and Joshua Eagle 6: 4 and 7: 5. In the men's category, the top seeded pairing consisting of the American Donald Johnson and Piet Norval from South Africa won. It was Johnson's second double title of the season, celebrating the first with Byron Black , and the eleventh of his career. For Norval it was the first title of the season and also the eleventh of his career. It was the first title the two could celebrate together.
