Markus Hipfl (born April 26, 1978 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is a former Austrian tennis player .

Youth and first steps

Hipfl started playing tennis at the age of four and was first looked after by his father. In his youth he caused a sensation in Austria and was already celebrated as the successor to Thomas Muster . In 1992 he was U14 world champion with the Austrian team, in 1994 he won the Orange Bowl and the runner-up world title with the team. In 1997 he won the satellite series in Italy and Austria. He made his debut on the ATP tour in 1994. At the beginning of his professional career he was coached by Ronald Leitgeb , Thomas Muster's coach at the time.

Career history

In 1994 Hipfl started at the ATP tournament in St. Pölten , but lost in the first round against Francisco Clavet with 0: 6 and 4: 6.

In 1995 he continued to focus on youth tournaments and received a wild card for the ATP tournament in Vienna . He played against Mark Woodforde and lost again in the first round.

In 1996 he made his debut in the Austrian Davis Cup team and played against Gustavo Kuerten in Brazil . After winning the first two sets, he lost in five sets. He started for the first time in Kitzbühel and reached the second round after defeating Stefan Koubek .

In 1998 Hipfl won the Challenger tournaments in Nettingsdorf and Guadalajanea in Mexico . In 1999 he reached the quarter-finals in St. Pölten, Palermo and Mallorca. In 2001 he celebrated his greatest success with reaching the final in St. Pölten, which he lost against his training partner Andrea Gaudenzi 0: 6 and 5: 7. In the same year he celebrated victories over Marcelo Ríos in Buenos Aires , Albert Costa or Yevgeny Kafelnikow at the ATP Masters tournament in Monte Carlo . At the beginning of 2002 he was ranked 62nd in the world . Markus Hipfl struggled with injury problems his entire career. He made his comeback in Kitzbühel in 2005 , but injured his elbow again . He currently plays in smaller tournaments, but has ended his professional career.

His Davis Cup record of 10-3 is impressive. Among other things, he and Stefan Koubek participated in the 1999 success over Sweden.
