Galo Blanco (born October 8, 1976 in Oviedo ) is a former Spanish tennis player .

Life

Blanco started playing tennis at the age of five. At 14 he was discovered and promoted by Luis Corretja, the father of Àlex Corretja . In 1994 he won the national Spanish youth championship by beating Carlos Moyá in the final . In 1995 he became a professional tennis player and was able to celebrate his first title win on the ATP Challenger Tour in Tampere that same year . The following year he was included in the top 100 for the first time. In 1997 he reached a semi-final on the ATP World Tour for the first time in Kitzbühel . After two more semi-finals in 1998, he was able to win his first and only ATP tournament victory in 1999 when he defeated his compatriot Albert Portas in San Marino . In 2001 he reached the final of Acapulco , but lost to Gustavo Kuerten . In the course of his career he also won four titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings with position 40 in singles (1998) and 338 in doubles (2004).

His best result in a Grand Slam tournament in singles was his entry into the quarter-finals of the French Open in 1997 , in which he was eliminated after his round of 16 victory over Petr Korda against Patrick Rafter . In 2000 he "reciprocated" and beat defending champion Rafter in the first round of the US Open 7: 6 (3), 2: 6, 6: 3, 1: 6 and 7: 6 (5). In 2001 Blanco reached the round of 16 there with victories over Pete Sampras and Rainer Schüttler .

After his professional career, Blanco worked as a tennis coach. He looked after Milos Raonic , from mid-2013 to mid-December 2013 he was Jürgen Melzer's trainer .
