The defending champion in the singles was the American Pete Sampras , who did not take part in this tournament this year. Instead, his fellow countryman Michael Chang , who was placed fourth and benefited in the final from Jan-Michael Gambill's abandonment after the second set, won. Chang's second win at the tournament after 1996 was his first and only success of the season and his 34th title win overall. It was also the last success of his career and the sixth time in a row that the title stayed in the host country.
In doubles, the two Australians, Paul Kilderry and Sandon Stolle , who were seeded four , who also benefited from Gambill's injury and won the final without a fight, won. They replaced Byron Black and Wayne Ferreira as titleholders, who both did not run this year. It was the first title of the season for the two Australians, as well as the third and last of his career for Kilderry, and the 14th for Stolle.
