Paradorn Srichaphan ( Thai ภราดร ศรี ชา พันธุ์ , RTGS Pharadon Sichaphan , pronunciation: [pʰaraːdɔːn sǐːt͡ɕʰaːpʰan] ; born June 14, 1979 in Bangkok ) is a former Thai tennis player .

Career

Paradorn started playing tennis at the age of six. Under the training of his father Chanachai Srichaphan , he developed into one of the best players in his country.

In 1998 Paradorn joined the professional circus. In the first years he placed in the world rankings in the lower part of the Top 100. In 2000 he took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney, but was eliminated there in the second round.

With his surprise victory in 2002 at the Wimbledon tennis tournament over Andre Agassi, Paradorn moved up to the top 30 in the world rankings. In 2003 it was even briefly among the top ten.

Paradorn was appointed cultural ambassador for his country by the Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he led the Thai Olympic team as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. In the men's singles he was seeded number 12, but was defeated in the first round by the Swede Joachim Johansson in two sets (2: 6, 3: 6).

In 2007, Paradorn had to take a long break from tendinitis that he contracted at a tournament in Miami that spring. Only on September 30, 2009 at the tournament in Bangkok he was able to celebrate his comeback in doubles alongside Danai Udomchoke . They were defeated by Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Peya 6: 2, 1: 6 and [6:10].

In November 2007, Paradorn married the Canadian beauty queen Natalie Glebova , Miss Universe of 2005. The couple divorced in 2011.

In June 2010 Paradorn ended his professional career due to persistent injury problems. Previously, he had broken both hands in a motorcycle accident. After the end of his career, he began studying political science at Ramkhamhaeng University , an open-access university, from which he graduated in 2011. He and his brother founded a tennis academy in his hometown of Khon Kaen . He was also involved in various business projects, including the marketing of underwear and a natural-based sexual enhancer . In the 2011 Thai parliamentary election , he stood for the Chart Pattana Puea Pandin party , led by the President of the Thai tennis association LTAT, Suwat Liptapanlop .
