Tennis Masters Cup 2000

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tennis Masters Cup 2000 was the 31st edition of the Tennis Masters Cup and represented the final individual tournament of the season with the eight best-placed players in the tennis world rankings . It took place from November 28th to December 3rd, 2000 for the first and so far only time in Lisbon on an indoor hard court. It was also the first time that the tournament was held under this name. Until that season, it was marketed as the ATP World Tour Championships . The corresponding double tournament, the ATP Tour World Doubles Championships , was held in Bengaluru from December 13th .

In contrast to all other tournaments on the ATP Tour , the final tournaments were not held continuously in the knockout system. Instead, the eight participants, divided into two groups, first met in round robin mode, in which the two best players in both groups advanced to the semi-finals. Only from this point on was the tournament played with elimination rounds.

The prize money was also paid out contrary to the other ATP tournaments. Placement was not the only thing that counted here, the matches and sets won also contributed to the amount of the payout for the individual players. The total prize pool was $ 3.7 million.

It was won by the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten , who was the first South American to finish the season as the leader in the world rankings. Among other things, he defeated last year's winner Pete Sampras in the semi-finals .
