Sebastian Rieschick (born February 15, 1986 in Berlin ) is a former German tennis player .

life and career

2003–2004: 1st place in the junior world rankings and ATP debut

Sebastian Rieschick started playing tennis at the Berlin tennis club TC Weiss-Gelb Lichtenrade at the age of six. At the age of ten he won a Berlin youth tournament for the first time, and since 2001 he has competed in international junior tournaments. In 2003 and 2004 he won several major tournaments and finally made it to number 1 in the junior world rankings in January 2004. He defeated, among others, players like Juan Martín del Potro or Gaël Monfils . In Grand Slam tournaments he never made it past the round of 16 in singles, in doubles he made it to the finals at the 2004 US Open alongside Andreas Beck .

In 2003 Sebastian Rieschick tried for the first time to qualify for future tournaments in the men's area. In July 2004 he got a wild card for the ATP tournament in Stuttgart , but lost his first round match against Hugo Armando . A month later he was finally able to win a future match for the first time at a future tournament in Munich , and in November 2004 he reached a future semi-final in Belgium .

2005–2006: Successes in future and challenger tournaments

In January 2005 Rieschick stood in a future final for the first time, and in August 2005 he won his first future title. In December 2005, the second Future title followed, and thereby the jump to 319th place in the tennis world rankings . It went even better in doubles: Together with Andreas Beck , he made it through to the semifinals at the Stuttgart ATP tournament , and with Frank Moser he won a Challenger tournament for the first time in November 2005 in Sunderland .

In early 2006, Sebastian Rieschick tried to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open . However, he was eliminated in the first qualifying round against Michael Berrer . In his second ATP match in Stuttgart in July 2006 (again with a wildcard) Sebastian Rieschick was able to win the first set against Nicolás Lapentti , but he lost the match in three sets. At the future level, he reached a final that year, and at the Challenger tournament in Kawana he was in a Challenger semifinals for the first time. He defeated Danai Udomchoke for the first time a player from the Top 100. In doubles, Rieschick reached two Challenger Finals this year, but he lost both.

2007–2010: setbacks and comeback

After he was still in the top 400 of the world rankings in 2006, Sebastian Rieschick fell back to 646 in 2007. The biggest success of this year was a future semifinal participation; on the other hand there were a total of eight first round defeats. In 2008 he was able to reach a total of four future finals, of which he won one. As a result, he fought his way back into the top 400 in the world rankings. In 2009 Sebastian Rieschick played mostly Challenger tournaments, but never got past the second round. His victory over the top 100 player Bobby Reynolds in May 2009 in Ramat Hasharon should be emphasized . In doubles he was able to win four future tournaments in a row in April and May 2009.

The year 2010 began without any major successes, so that Sebastian Rieschick fell back to position 513 in the world rankings in August 2010. But then he started his most successful series to date in Thailand : first he won two future tournaments in succession, and then reached the semi-finals as a qualifier at the Challenger tournament in Bangkok . Only there he could be stopped by Konstantin Kravchuk after 16 wins in a row in a close match of three . At the second Challenger tournament in Bangkok a week later he reached the quarterfinals again as a qualifier, where he lost to the eventual winner Grigor Dimitrov . In the world rankings he improved by almost 200 places within a few weeks. But the streak of success went on: Although he failed to qualify at the ATP tournament in Bangkok , another future title followed in Kuwait in October 2010 . At the end of the year, Rieschick won his futures titles number 4 and 5 in Australia and New Zealand this year, and finished 2010 at its best-ever position of 238. His goal for 2011 was to make the top 100 create.

2011: Short-term entry into the top 200

At the beginning of 2011, Sebastian Rieschick qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the second time at the Australian Open . In the first qualifying round he led against local hero John Millman 6: 3, 5: 3 when the game had to be interrupted due to rain. After the rain break, Rieschick did not find his way back into the game and lost the match in three sets. In the months that followed, Rieschick reached several Challenger quarter-finals. In qualifying for the French Open in May 2011, he was eliminated in the second round in a hard-fought three-set match against Alejandro Falla , who then qualified for the main draw and made it to the second round. In the Wimbledon qualification, Sebastian Rieschick was defeated by Bernard Tomic to a later qualifier who even reached the quarter-finals. Nevertheless, Rieschick was listed in the top 200 of the world rankings for a few weeks for the first time in early July 2011. After he had also missed the qualification at the US Open , he was able to qualify for the ATP tournament in Stockholm in October 2011 . Against Michael Ryderstedt , who started with a wildcard , he managed to win his first match at ATP level there before he was eliminated in the second round against Tobias Kamke . At the end of the year Sebastian Rieschick reached the final of a Challenger tournament for the first time in his career in Toyota after a narrow quarter-final victory over Go Soeda . There he lost, however, in two sets against defending champion Tatsuma Ito .

Rieschick competed in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2007 for the ETuF Essen , in 2008 for the TEC Waldau Stuttgart , 2011 for the TC Radolfzell and in 2012 and 2013 for the Gladbacher HTC .

Rieschick played his last professional match on the tour in March 2012 and was last included in the world rankings in February 2013.
