Marcos Baghdatis ( Greek Μάρκος Παγδατής - Márkos Pagdatís ; born June 17, 1985 in Limassol ) is a former Cypriot tennis player .

Career

Baghdatis moved to Paris at the age of 13 and trained there at a tennis academy. In 2003 he was the best junior player in the world - among other things, he won the junior competition at the Australian Open in 2003 - and, like in 2002, he reached the final of the US Open .

In 2005 he reached his first final at an ATP tournament at the Swiss Indoors in Basel and was the first representative of his country to make it into the top 100 in the world rankings .

His greatest success was reaching the finals in 2006 at the Australian Open , during which he prevailed against the seeded players Andy Roddick (number 2), Ivan Ljubičić (7) and David Nalbandian (4) , among others . In the final he had to admit defeat to world number one Roger Federer 7: 5, 5: 7, 0: 6, 2: 6. For the first time in his career, Baghdatis was among the top 30 players in the world. He played his most spectacular match at the US Open in 2006 when he met Andre Agassi in the second round . In a very competitive game, Agassi won in five sets.

Baghdatis delivered another spectacular match in 2007 in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon with Novak Đoković . The encounter lasted a full five hours, Baghdatis finally lost 6: 7, 6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 4 and 5: 7.

The 2010 season began for him with a tournament victory in Sydney . In the final he defeated Richard Gasquet 6: 4 and 7: 6.

Baghdatis attracted particular attention at the Australian Open 2012 . During the second round game against Stanislas Wawrinka (6: 7, 4: 6, 7: 5, 1: 6) he smashed four tennis rackets in a short time out of anger over a lost service game. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he led the Cypriot delegation as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony.

In 2019 he resigned from professional sport after his second round loss to Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon .

effect

Baghdatis is a folk hero in his native Cyprus . His entry into the final of the Australian Open in 2006 caused enormous euphoria and a tennis boom. According to a poll before the tournament, Baghdatis was the second best-known person in Cyprus after then-President Tassos Papadopoulos . Also unique are his fans, who loudly support him during his games, as is usually the case at football matches . Due to its great popularity, the Cypriot government decided to exempt Baghdatis from compulsory military service .

Private

Marcos Baghdatis is the son of a Greek Orthodox father who comes from Lebanon . His mother Androula is Greek from Cyprus . His father Christos moved to Cyprus after meeting Androula. The parents own a clothing store in Paramytha , a small village near Limassol . Marcos has three siblings, sister Zena and two older brothers, Marinos and Petros, who have also played for Cyprus in the Davis Cup . Baghdatis is a devout Christian , he crosses himself before every game. He is married to the former Croatian tennis player Karolina Šprem , with whom he has a daughter. In 2015 a second daughter was born.
