Tassos Papadopoulos ( Greek Τάσσος Νικολάου Παπαδόπουλος , born January 7, 1934 in Nicosia ; † December 12, 2008 ibid) was a Cyprus- Greek lawyer. From March 1, 2003 to February 28, 2008 he held the office of President of the Republic of Cyprus .

Life

Papadopoulos studied law in Great Britain and then practiced as a lawyer in Cyprus. From 1960 he worked for the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, for twelve years . Papadopoulos was a member of EOKA , which campaigned for the independence of the British colony of Cyprus. He was politically active since the mid-1960s. Papadopoulos was one of the signatories of the Cyprus Constitution and served in various ministerial offices from 1960 to 1970. In 2000 he became chairman of the Civic Democratic Party of Cyprus. He won the presidential election on February 16, 2003 with 51.5 percent of the vote and succeeded Glafkos Klerides on March 1, 2003 . Tassos Papadopoulos was a strict opponent of federal coexistence with the Turkish northern part of the island and was therefore against the Annan peace plan of the United Nations .

In February 2008 Papadopoulos ran for a second term, but had to admit defeat to his most important opponents Dimitris Christofias and Ioannis Kasoulidis in the first round of the presidential elections . He narrowly missed the runoff election on February 24, 2008 with 31.8 percent.

Papadopoulos was a heavy smoker. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital on November 22, 2008 and died on December 12, 2008 at 1:05 pm of small cell lung cancer . The funeral took place on December 15, 2008 in the Agia Sophia Church in Nicosia.

In the morning hours of December 11, 2009, unknown persons opened Papadopoulos' tomb and stole his body. After a telephone call, his body was found in another grave in Nicosia on March 8, 2010 and identified by a DNA test the following day.
