Life

With Angela Merkel at the EPP summit (2012)

Nikos Anastasiadis studied law in Athens and London and initially embarked on a career as a lawyer. In 1981 he was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives, to which he has belonged continuously since then. From 1991 to 1993 and from 1993 to 1997 he was chairman of the parliamentary group, from 1996 to 2001 Vice-President of Parliament. On June 8, 1997 he became chairman of the DISY party .

In the 2013 presidential election, he ran for the office of President, which was previously held by the no longer running Communist Dimitris Christofias . In the first ballot on February 17, 2013, Anastasiadis was able to unite the most votes by a long way ahead of the independent but Communist-backed former health minister Stavros Malas and the representative of the political center Giorgos Lillikas . He did not get an absolute majority, so there was a second ballot.

Anastasiadis won this runoff election on February 24, 2013 by a large margin over Malas. He received 57.48 percent of the votes cast. The turnout was 80.7 percent. On February 27, 2013, Anastasiadis presented his cabinet .

In the presidential election on January 28, 2018, Anastasiadis received a relative majority of the votes with 35.51% in the first ballot. Second place was again Stavros Malas with 30.24%. Both competed against each other in a runoff election a week later; Anastasiadis received 56 percent of the vote.

Insider trading allegations

Nikos Anastasiadis was accused of insider trading in connection with the banking haircut in the Republic of Cyprus. For example , on March 12 and 13, 2013 - two days before the haircut - 21 million euros are said to have been transferred to Great Britain from the Laiki bank account of A. Loutsios and Sons Limited , which belongs to the father of Anastasiadis' son-in-law. President Anastasiadis spoke of a smear campaign on the part of the opposition, as the companies mentioned had left several million euros in their accounts with Greek Cypriot banks and as a result - like many other Greek Cypriots - suffered heavy losses.
