Georges Vassiliou

Georges Vassiliou (Γιώργος Βασιλείου Giorgos Vasiliou ; born May 20, 1931 ) is a Greek Cypriot politician and was President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993 .

In February 1988, the non-party Vassiliou was elected the new president in the second round with almost 52 percent. His rival candidate and later successor Glafkos Klerides , who ran for the conservative-democratic parties, received 48 percent. The predecessor and old incumbent Spyros Kyprianou could not qualify for the runoff election with 27 percent in the first ballot.

In 1993 Vassiliou founded the liberal Enomeni Dimokrates (United Democrats) party, which he chaired until 2005.

He is married to the former EU Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and has three children with her.
