Ludovic Orban ( pronunciation: [ ˈludovik ˈorban ]; born May 25, 1963 in Brașov ) is a Romanian politician of the PNL . He was the Prime Minister of Romania from November 4, 2019 to December 7, 2020 .

Life

Orban was born in Brașov to an ethnic Romanian and an ethnic Hungarian (Magyar) . He attended school in Brașov and completed a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Brașov by 1988 . He then worked as an engineer and in 1991/92 as editor of the daily newspaper Viitorul Românesc . Orban was politically active in the Partidul Liberal in 1993 , which later became part of the PNL. In 2002 he became chairman of the Bucharest PNL.

Political career

Orban became Secretary of State in 1999. From 2004 to 2007 he was Bucharest's Deputy Mayor under Adriean Videanu . In 2007, Prime Minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu appointed him to the Romanian government as Minister of Transport . In the parliamentary elections in 2008 Orban was elected to the Chamber of Deputies , but he was no longer a member of the newly formed government. In 2017 Orban was elected chairman of the PNL. After the failure of the government of Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă , Orban was replaced by President Klaus Johannis on October 15, 2019 with the formation of a new cabinetinstructed. His government was elected by parliament on November 4, 2019, but it did not have a stable majority. Just three months later, on February 5, 2020, Orban and his government were expressed mistrust by parliament. On the following day, President Johannis Orban once again instructed him to put together a cabinet and put it in a vote of confidence in parliament. In the parliamentary elections in Romania in December 2020, his party PNL was able to increase by 5 percentage points, but again failed to achieve a majority in parliament. The day after, on December 7, 2020, Orban resigned.

Private

Orban is married and has one son. His older brother Leonard Orban was Minister for Europe and European Commissioner for Multilingualism in the Barroso I Commission from 2007 to 2010.

In addition to his native Romanian , Orban is fluent in English and French . He also has a basic knowledge of German and Hungarian . He is not related to the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán .
