Political career

Grindeanu has been a member of the social democratic party PSD since 1996 (then still PDSR). From 2008 to 2012 he was Vice Mayor of Timisoara . From December 2014 to November 2015 he was Minister for Telecommunications under the Prime Minister Victor Ponta ( Ponta IV cabinet ). Then he was head of administration of Timiș County .

prime minister

On December 30, 2016 he was accepted as Prime Minister by Klaus Johannis after Johannis refused the office of the first proposed Sevil Shhaideh . On January 4, 2017, he was elected by parliament with 295 votes; 133 MPs voted against ( Grindeanu cabinet ).

Less than a month after Grindeanu's election, the planned introduction of an amnesty law for convicted corrupt politicians led to mass protests lasting several days in Bucharest and up to 14 other cities, the largest since the revolutionary protests in 1989 . Romanians organized mass protests against this law around the world. It stipulates that abuse of office for a value in dispute of less than 45,000 euros can no longer be punished with a prison sentence. The government justified the introduction, among other things, with overcrowded prisons. However, critics fear that the regulation would protect politicians suspected of being corrupt, including party leader Liviu Dragnea , who was convicted of election rigging . The judicial supervisory authority CSM, President Klaus Johannis and the former Prime Minister and ombudsman for civil rights, Victor Ciorbea , brought an action against the law before the Romanian Constitutional Court . The court upheld the Corruption Act on February 7, 2017.

On June 21, 2017, Grindeanu's government was overthrown by a vote of no confidence by the governing parties, which was a first in Romania. Grindeanu was expelled from his party on June 15, 2017. Party leader Liviu Dragnea threatened other government supporters with expulsion from the party. Dragnea herself has a criminal record. A law that excludes convicted officials from high offices makes it impossible for Dragnea to become Prime Minister himself.
