In late 2004 Popescu-Tăriceanu formed a coalition of the PNL, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania and the Democratic Party (PD). Just a few months later, he fell out with President Traian Băsescu . This dispute led to the PD leaving the government in April 2007. Popescu-Tăriceanu then formed a minority government from the PNL and the Hungarian Union ( Cabinet Tăriceanu II ), which was temporarily tolerated by the previously opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD). On May 19, 2007 he did not succeed in a referendum to remove Băsescu from his office. In return, the PD failed on June 11, 2007 and the Social Democratic Party on October 3, 2007 in an attempt to overthrow Popescu-Tăriceanu through motions of no confidence in parliament. In the parliamentary elections on November 30, 2008 , Popescu-Tăriceanu and his National Liberal Party suffered a defeat; Popescu-Tăriceanu failed to become prime minister again.

Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu was also Vice President of the European Liberals ELDR and the LI ( Liberal International ). In his own party, the PNL, he was defeated on March 20, 2009 at a party congress in a vote for the party chairmanship against Crin Antonescu .

In 2012 Popescu-Tăriceanu was elected to the Senate . At the beginning of 2014 he left the PNL. Shortly afterwards he was elected chairman of the Senate as an independent with the votes of the PSD . He then founded the Partidul Liberal Reformer (PLR) with other MPs and was elected chairman. In November 2014, Popescu-Tăriceanu ran for the Romanian presidential election , in which he achieved the third strongest result, but clearly missed the runoff.

In 2015, Popescu-Tăriceanus PLR merged with the Partidul Conservator to form Partidul Alianța Liberalilor și Democraților (ALDE), where he was elected co-chair. After the parliamentary elections in Romania in 2016 , the ALDE participated in the government with the PSD.

Romania's Supreme Court ruled on February 10, 2017 that Popescu-Tăriceanu was charged with alleged false testimony and aiding and abetting of a criminal in court.

On September 2, 2019, he stepped down as President of the Senate.
