Mihai Fifor

Mihai-Viorel Fifor (born May 10, 1970 in Drobeta Turnu Severin ) is a Romanian politician ( PSD ). He was Romanian Defense Minister from September 2017 to November 2018. He was also interim Prime Minister of his country from January 16 to 29, 2018 . He has been General Secretary of the PSD since June 2019 and vice-premier since July of the same year.

Life

Fifor attended school in his birthplace and then studied Romanian language and literature as well as English at the Craiova University until 1995 . He then embarked on an academic career at the social and human sciences institute of Academia Română in Craiova and received his doctorate in 2003 at the same university in social anthropology. In his dissertation he dealt with the Romanian- speaking ethnic group of the Wallachians in the Serbian Timočka Krajina (Valea Timocului). From 2001 to 2005, Fifor was director of the Center for the Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Culture in Dolj County , then until 2012 director of the Regional History Museum of Little Wallachia ( Muzeul Olteniei ) in Craiova.

From January to October 2009 and again from May to December 2012, Fifor was State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior. In 2012 he was elected to the Romanian Senate . As a member of the PSD, he represented the Dolj district and, from 2016, the Arad district . In 2015–16 he was chairman of the PSD parliamentary group in the Senate, and in 2016–17 he was chairman of the internal committee.

In the Tudose cabinet , he first became Minister of Economics on June 29, 2017, and moved to the head of the Ministry of Defense on September 12, 2017. After Mihai Tudose's resignation, President Klaus Iohannis appointed the incumbent defense minister as provisional head of government. On January 29, 2018, he was replaced by Viorica Dăncilă as the new regular head of government. Until November 2018 he was again Minister of Defense in the Dăncilă cabinet . On June 29, 2019 he was elected Secretary General of the PSD. Since July 24, Fifor has been Deputy Prime Minister in the Dăncilă Cabinet, responsible for strategic partnerships. After the resignation of Interior Minister Nicolae Moga on July 30, 2019, Fifor was entrusted with his office on an interim basis.
