Radu Vasile

Radu Vasile (born October 10, 1942 in Drăgăşani , Vâlcea County ; † July 3, 2013 ) was a Romanian historian , university professor and politician of the Partidul Național Țărănesc Creştin Democrat (PNȚCD), who was also prime minister from 1998 to 1999 .

Life

After attending school, Vasile studied history at the History Faculty of the University of Bucharest and graduated with honors in 1967. For some time he was denied access to higher education because of his father, who was a political prisoner as a lawyer for criticizing the government . In 1971 he became a research assistant at the Faculty of Economic History at the Bucharest Business Academy and, after obtaining a Philosophiae Doctor in Economics (Ph. D. Economics) in 1977, he was appointed lecturer in 1978 at the Faculty of Economic History at the Business Academy.

At the end of 1989, with the support of the students, he was elected Vice Dean of the Faculty of Commercial Management at the Business Academy and held this office until 1992. During this time, he also took courses in European integration at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich part.

After joining the PNȚCD, he began a political career; he became a member of the Senate for the first time on October 21, 1992 and was a member of it until 2004. He was also Vice President of the Senate from September to November 1996, between February and June 1998 and February 2004.

In 1994 he accepted a professorship at the business academy.

On April 17, 1998 he became Prime Minister of Romania and held this office until December 13, 1999. During this time (January and February 1999), protests by miners, the so-called " Mineriades ", took place. There were 25 ministers in his cabinet. After his resignation, the previous Minister for Labor and Social Protection Alexandru Athanasiu became Prime Minister of a transitional government until December 16, followed by Mugur Isărescu (until 2000).

After he resigned from the PNȚCD in December 1999, he initially belonged to the Senate as a non-party before he became a member of the Partidul Democrat (PD) in 2000 . After leaving the Senate, he resumed his work as a university professor and also wrote poems under the pseudonym Radu Mischiu.
