Alexandru Athanasiu

Alexandru Athanasiu (born January 1, 1955 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician and lawyer.

Career

Athanasiu studied law at the University of Bucharest until 1978 , then was a judge from 1978 to 1982 and then university assistant until 1990. In 1989 he received his doctorate in law. After Athanasiu was a lecturer at the University of Bucharest from 1990 to 1999, he became a university professor in 1999.

Since 1993 Athanasiu has been chairman of the Romanian Labor Law Society.

From December 13-22, 1999, Athanasiu was the acting Prime Minister of Romania, having previously served as Minister of Labor between 1996 and 1999. He has been a member of the Romanian Senate since 2000 and was Minister for Education and Research from 2003 to 2004.

In the course of Romania's admission to the European Union , he was a member of the European Parliament for the Partidul Social Democrat from January 1 to December 9, 2007 , where he was a member of the Social Democratic Group in the European Parliament .

Honors

Athanasiu is a Knight of the Star Order of Romania .
