Partidul Democrat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Partidul Democrat was a political party in Romania with a social democratic to Christian social orientation. It is not to be confused with the Partidul Național Țărănesc Creştin Democrat , the “historical” Christian Democrats. The party existed from 1993 to 2007.

history

Like the Social Democrats ( Partidul Social Democrat / PSD), the Democrats, too, historically emerged from the old Communist Party. The disempowerment of Prime Minister Petre Roman by Ion Iliescu (1991) led to a lasting rift between the supporters of both leaders. The former founded the PD and became its first chairman. According to the international perception, the PD was accepted into the Socialist International as a full member well before the PSD (1999).

In 2000, contrary to the general trend, the PD achieved prestige success in the capital Bucharest : its candidate Traian Băsescu became mayor. After Petre Roman's internal party disempowerment, he followed him as party leader. The joint candidacy of the PD with the right-wing liberal PNL as " Allianz DA " in 2004 impaired the relationship between the Socialist International and the Democrats. Băsescu, elected head of state after the election victory of the liberal-conservative coalition, and the new party leader Emil Boc , Mayor of Cluj-Napoca , then switched to the European Christian Democrats, i. H. to the EPP .

In December 2007 the PD merged with the Partidul Liberal Democrat ( Liberal Democratic Party ) under Theodor Stolojan to form the Partidul Democrat Liberal ( Democratic-Liberal Party ).
