District of Vâlcea
Vâlcea [ ˈvɨlt͜ʃe̯a ] is a Romanian district ( Județ ) in the Wallachia region with the district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea . Its common abbreviation and the license plate are VL.
The county Valcea bordered to the north of the Sibiu county , in the East to the County of Arges , in the south-east and in the south to the Olt County , in the southwest of the Dolj County , in the west to the Gorj county and in the Northwest to the counties Hunedoara and Alba .
Demographics
In 2002 the Vâlcea County had 413,247 inhabitants and a population density of 72 inhabitants per km². Of these, 408,178 were Romanians , 3,955 Roma , 332 Hungarians , 136 Germans , 36 Turks , 33 Italians .
In 2011, the district had 371,714 inhabitants, thus a population density of 64 inhabitants per km².

The district has a total area of 5765 km², which corresponds to 2.41% of the area of Romania.
Located on the south side of the Southern Carpathians (Carpații Meridionali) , the Olt (Alt) river crosses the district over a length of approx. 130 kilometers in a north-south direction. The greater part of the district - west of the Olt River - is in Little Wallachia ; the part east of the Alt in the Great Wallachia . Ten reservoirs have been built along the Olt River in Vâlcea County. The largest reservoir is the Vidra reservoir ; this is located on the Lotru River in the northwest of the district. Furthermore, the Brădișor reservoir is located on Lotru between the Lotru and Căpățână mountains .
