Babeni is a small town in the county Vâlcea in the region Wallachia in Romania .
location
Băbeni lies in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , to the right of the Olt River . The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 20 km northeast.
history
Archaeologists have found remains of settlements from the La Tène period and the period of the Roman Empire in the area of the city .
Băbeni is first mentioned in documents in 1491, when the village was donated to the nearby Bistrița monastery by a feudal lord.
In 2001 a referendum took place in which the citizens of Băbeni voted by a large majority in favor of converting their municipality into a city. A year later, the Romanian parliament agreed to this request and declared Băbeni a city.
The most important branches of industry are agriculture, wood processing, trade and the extraction of oil.
population
In 1930 about 2700 inhabitants were registered in the area of today's city, of which about 200 referred to themselves as Roma , the rest as Romanians . In the 2002 census, the city had 9,475 inhabitants, including 8,977 Romanians and 107 Roma.
traffic
Băbeni is located on the railway line between Piatra-Olt and Râmnicu Vâlcea in the Olt Valley . Express and local trains run several times a day on this line. There is also a branch line from Băbeni to Alunu . Until 1970 a forest railway (gauge 760 mm) drove from the place , the tracks of which are still preserved. Băbeni is located at 64 Drum național Street .
