Băile Govora is a small town and a spa town in the Vâlcea County in the Wallachia Region in Romania .

location

Băile Govora is located in the southern foreland of the Transylvanian Alps , in a right side valley of the Olt River . The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 15 km northeast.

history

The present city emerged in the second half of the 19th century, when the Govora monastery, a few kilometers down the valley, was secularized in 1864 . The therapeutic effects of the springs, which have been known for a long time, should be used for tourism purposes. First, veterans of the Romanian army took a rest here. In 1889 Băile Govora was officially founded as a health resort. Mainly rheumatic diseases and gout were treated . Other indications were respiratory, gynecological and neurological diseases. During the First World War , German soldiers occupied the place and confiscated some valuables. The spa facilities were reopened two years after the war; In 1927 Băile Govora received city status. The Second World War also interrupted the development of the health resort. In 1948 - after the communists came to power in Romania - the spa facilities were nationalized. More hotels opened; the number of spa guests rose rapidly (40,000 in 1980).

After the revolution in 1989 and the fundamental change in economic conditions, numerous spa facilities and hotels were reconstructed and new ones built. The most important branch of business is still tourism.
