Râmnicu Vâlcea , old spelling Rîmnicu Vîlcea [ ˈrɨmniku ˈvɨlt͜ʃe̯a ] is the capital of the district of Vâlcea in Romania .
Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 180 kilometers from Bucharest and is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in what is now Romania. It is located on the European route 81 , the north-south line ( Arad - Sibiu - Piteşti - Bucharest), the second most important main route in Romania. The license plate is VL.
Place name and location
The name has a Slavic origin (Râmnicu = pond, small pond) and Vâlcea (from vâlc = wolf). It does justice to the idyllic location of this town in the southernmost valley of the Southern Carpathians , which is surrounded by wooded mountain ridges to the south. In the immediate vicinity there are spas such as Călimăneşti , Băile Govora and Băile Olăneşti , as well as sights such as B. 'Masivul Cozia' with the monastery of the same name .
The Olt (German Alt , Latin Alutus ), a wide river and inlet of the Danube, flows through the city . It will be dammed twice within the urban area and, with its power stations, will provide the necessary electricity for the emerging city. Another body of water that flows through the city is the Olăneşti . Depending on the season, it turns into a raging body of water or a leisurely trickle flowing along it.
From a geographical point of view, Râmnicu Vâlcea belongs to southern Romania, to Wallachia , more precisely: Oltenia, the so-called Little Wallachia , the actual Romanian heartland. It was the starting point of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 . This event and the first intonation of the national anthem will be commemorated in the form of a monument at the historical location of the event in the Zavoy city park .
economy
Economically, Râmnicu Vâlcea was not one of the most important Romanian cities for a long time. Only the chemical and food industries in the south (Oltchim, Raureni) and medium-sized shoe and furniture factories were worth mentioning.
For several years the city was considered a stronghold of international online and credit card fraud and has been nicknamed Hackerville ever since . This development was expressed in the cityscape, for example, in the existence of more than two dozen Western Union branches and the high prevalence of German luxury cars by Romanian standards.
