Bălceşti is a small town in Vâlcea County in the Wallachia Region in Romania .

location

Bălceşti lies in the Wallachian Plain , on the lower reaches of the Olteț , a right tributary of the Olt ( Old ). The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is about 65 km northeast.

history

The first written mention of Bălceşti comes from the year 1574. Since the beginning of the 20th century the place was a local commercial and administrative center. In 2002, Bălceşti received city status. The most important branch of business is agriculture.

population

The 2002 census counted 5,780 inhabitants, including 5,616 Romanians and 159 Roma . About 2300 lived in Bălceşti itself, the rest in the eight incorporated villages.

traffic

Bălceşti has no rail connection. There are regular bus connections to Râmnicu Vâlcea and Craiova . The city lies on Drum național 65C from Craiova to Horezu .
