Berbeşti is a small town in Vâlcea County in the Wallachia Region in Romania .
location
Berbeşti lies in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , on the upper reaches of the Olteț river . The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is about 40 km northeast.
history
The oldest archaeological finds on the city's territory date from the Stone and Bronze Ages . The first written mention of Berbeşti comes from the year 1423. At the time of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1859–1866) Berbeşti was the seat of a municipality. Since the 1970s, the until then rural character of the place changed fundamentally when the extraction of lignite (low-quality hard coal) began in a large open-cast mine. In 2003 Berbeşti received city status.
In addition to lignite extraction, the most important branches of business are agriculture (arable, fruit and wine growing, beekeeping).
population
In 1930 there were around 3750 people living in the area of today's city, including around 50 Roma ; the rest were Romanians . The 2002 census counted 5,704 inhabitants, including 5,697 Romanians. Only about 550 lived in Berbeşti itself, the rest in the five incorporated villages.
traffic
Berbești has no rail connection. There are regular bus connections to Horezu .
