Geographical location

Giurgiu is located on the lower reaches of the Danube , on the Bucharest – Giurgiu railway line and the E 70 and E 85 European roads , opposite the Bulgarian border town of Ruse , which is on the other bank of the Danube . Both cities are connected by the Giurgiu-Russe Friendship Bridge.

history

From 1417 to 1829 the city belonged directly to the empire of the Ottoman Turks and was thus one of the centers of Islam in Wallachia . In the last Russo-Austrian Turkish War , the Austro-Turkish armistice and preliminary peace was concluded in Giurgiu in 1790, which led to the Peace of Swishtov in 1791 . Before the Second World War, Giurgiu achieved international fame as a stop on the Orient Express , which initially even ended in the city.

The city had around 61,000 inhabitants in 2011. The average annual population growth is −0.7%. 17.2% of the people are unemployed. 16.8% of the population are under 15 years old, 3.6% are over 75 years old.
