The Giurgiu-Russe Friendship Bridge or Bridge of Friendship ( Bulgarian Мост на дружбата Most na druschbata ; Romanian Podul prieteniei ) is a road and rail bridge over the Danube between the cities of Giurgiu in Romania and Russe in Bulgaria .
history
Shortly after the end of the Second World War , the first project of a bridge between the cities of Ruse and Giurgiu arose, as can be seen on a Romanian postage stamp from 1948.
The concrete plans of the two-story steel - truss bridge provided Georgi Owtscharow († 1953). After his death, W. Andreew continued the work. Within two and a half years, between 1952 and 1954, bridge builders built the transport structure with Soviet help . It was opened on June 20, 1954. Road and rail traffic is carried over the Danube on two superimposed and separate bridge sections; there is also a sidewalk for pedestrians. The bridge is 2.8 km long and at its highest point protrudes 30 m above the water level. At the time of its opening, it was the longest combination bridge for car and rail traffic in Europe. An 85 m long middle section of the bridge can be raised to allow larger ships to pass through. The artistic design of the two bridge portals on the Bulgarian and Romanian side was carried out by the Ukrainian sculptor Mikhailo Ivanovich Parashchuk . The name Friendship Bridge goes back to Soviet proposals. Since the end of communism, it has mostly been called the first bridge over the Danube .
For years, the Friendship Bridge was the only fixed crossing over the approx. 470 km long Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube . In 2007, construction began on a second bridge in this area, connecting Vidin and Calafat . The second Danube bridge , known as the Europa Bridge , was opened in late summer 2013.
Usage fee
A bridge toll is levied from the Romanian side . This is 14 lei for vehicles with up to 8 seats . Payment in euros is also possible, but at € 6 it is twice as expensive as payment in lei. For vehicles up to 12 t including trailers 12 euros, for vehicles / buses over 12 t and max. 3 axles 28 euros and for vehicles / buses over 12 t and more than 3 axles 43 euros (as of end of 2013).
