Maria Marinela Mazilu (born April 12, 1991 in Râmnicu Vâlcea ) is a Romanian skeleton pilot .

Maria Mazilu lives in Râmnicu Vâlcea and has been running skeleton since 2006. A year later, she was promoted to the national team of her country. She made her international debut in November 2007 as part of a European Cup race in Igls , where she finished 22nd. In the following period she started regularly in this racing series. In December in Cesana Torinese and in January 2008 in St. Moritz , she initially achieved her best results with 12th place, until she took part in the Junior World Championships in Igls and thus for the first time in a major skeleton event and was 19th. In the following season Mazilu was able to increase their performance significantly. She continued to drive in the European Cup and finished two thirds and one fourth in three races in Igls. In addition, she was sixth at the Junior World Championships in Königssee .

From January 2009 the Romanian competed mostly in the Intercontinental Cup . She contested her first race in Cesana, where she finished 22nd. In Winterberg in November 2009 and in Igls in December, she was able to celebrate her best results in the racing series with eighth places. 42nd in the world rankings, she was the last athlete who for the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver could qualify, while the non-participation Joska Le Conté benefited. In the end, Mazilu took 19th place out of 20 participants, being the weakest athlete benefiting from the disqualification of the Japanese Nozomi Komuro . In all four races she achieved the weakest run time with 19th place and was not only more than 14 seconds behind the winner Amy Williams , but also seven seconds behind Jelena Judina, who was in 18th place in front of her .

In winter 2010/11 Mazilu started in three races each in the European and Intercontinental Cup and achieved eighth place as the best place at the European Cup in Winterberg. She also took part in the World Championship for the first time , but finished last among 26 starters. In the 2011/12 season she made her debut in the World Cup and achieved her best result of the season with 17th place in the first race in Igls. At the end of 2012 she won bronze at the Junior World Championships in Igls, which she was able to repeat the following season in Winterberg. In January 2014 she also won a race in the European Cup for the first time . At the end of the season, she took part in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi . There she finished last with 20th place, where she was able to move closer to the rest of the world in terms of running times than on her debut four years earlier and was less than six seconds behind winner Elizabeth Yarnold .

In 2014/15 she contested the first half of the season in the Intercontinental Cup , where she finished ninth in Lillehammer as the best result , and then five races in the World Cup , where she achieved the best results of her career so far as eleventh and tenth in the two races in Igls. At the World Championships she was 20th in the individual as two years earlier and also finished 9th in the team competition with the Romanian team.

In 2018 Mazilu took part in their third Olympic Games . In Pyeongchang she came in 18th place.
