Marian-Jean Marinescu (born August 11, 1952 in Râmnicu Vâlcea , Romania ) is a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Partidul Național Liberal.

Life

Marinescu was born in Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 1976 he graduated from the aerospace engineering faculty of the Bucharest Politehnica Institute and then worked as an engineer for Avioane SA and the Aviation Institute in Craiova.

He entered politics in 1992 as a member of Partidul Democrat (PD, later Partidul Democrat Liberal , PD-L) when he was elected a member of Craiova City Council. Marinescu was elected Vice President of the PD Section in Craiova (1994) and Dolj County (1997) and Secretary for Dolj and Oltenia in 2001. He was Prefect of Dolj in the cabinet of the Romanian Democratic Convention (1996-2000) and after 2004 a member of the District Council of Dolj, before he won a seat in the 2004 parliamentary elections on the common list of justice and truth.

Marian-Jean Marinescu is fluent in French and English and has administrative experience at national level.

In the course of Romania's admission to the European Union , he became a member of the European Parliament on January 1, 2007 . There he is a member of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats. Marinescu was Vice-President of the PPE Group for two legislative terms, Chairman of the PPE Working Group on Budgets and Structural Policies, Coordinator of the PPE Working Group for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, Vice-Coordinator of the Transport and Tourism Commission (TRAN), Vice-President of the Sky and Space Intergroup, Member of the Board of Directors of the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA), Ambassador and founding member of the Erasmus program for entrepreneurs. In the 2014-2019 legislative period, Marinescu was ranked the most active Romanian MEP with 15 reports as main rapporteur, 20 alternative reports and 5 opinion reports, as well as one of the most influential Romanian MEPs.

In the new 2019-2024 electoral term, Marian-Jean Marinescu will continue his work in the committees of which he was previously a member: as a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN), alternate member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE ) and alternate member of the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT). He is the EPP Group's transport policy coordinator.

Marian-Jean Marinescu has twice been named MEP of the Year (2014 and 2016) in the Research - Innovation field. He is a Grand Officer of the Order of the Star of Romania .
