Crin Antonescu (2009)

George Crin Laurențiu Antonescu (born September 21, 1959 in Tulcea ) is a Romanian historian and politician. He was chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and was this party's candidate for the 2009 presidential elections in Romania . After the PNL participated in the “Social Liberal Union” of the newly elected Prime Minister Victor Ponta in May 2012 , Antonescu was elected as the new President of the Romanian Senate at the beginning of July 2012 . During the suspension of Traian Băsescu, he also held the office of President on an interim basis until August 2012.

Professional career

Antonescu studied history in Bucharest until 1985. From 1985 to 1992 he worked as a history teacher in Vaslui and Tulcea, interrupted by a brief activity as a museologist in Tulcea from 1989 to 1990.

Political career

In 1990 Antonescu joined the PNL. Since 1992 he has made it into the Romanian parliament in every election for his party, first in the Chamber of Deputies , then in 2008 in the Senate . From 1995 to 2002 he was PNL Vice President. In 1996/1997 and from 2002 to 2008 Antonescu was chairman of the PNL group in the Chamber of Deputies. In the governments of Victor Ciorbea , Radu Vasile and Mugur Isărescu he worked as Minister for Youth and Sport.

On March 20, 2009, Antonescu defeated the former Prime Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu in a ballot for party leadership .

Subsequently, Crin Antonescu decided to run for the presidential election on November 22, 2009 . On October 16, 2009, Antonescu announced in a press conference held in Iași that Klaus Johannis - the incumbent mayor of Sibiu - would be appointed head of government if he was elected president.

His candidacy was supported by prominent representatives of Romanian civil society , such as the anti-communist dissident Doina Cornea , the siblings of the former head of the Romanian opposition, Corneliu Coposu , the historians Lucian Boia and Neagu Djuvara and the Mayor of Timișoaras , Gheorghe Ciuhandu . In the election, Antonescu won 20.02% of the vote and thus third place. He did not succeed in reaching the runoff election.

Across the country, Antonescu's share of the vote was relatively the same. According to electoral research, Antonescu was preferred by a relative majority of college graduates (33.5%).

In April 2012, Antenescus PNL participated in a vote of no confidence in the non-party Prime Minister Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu . After its overthrow, it formed together with the social democratic PSD and PC a “social liberal union” with PSD chairman Victor Ponta as the new head of government.

With the help of numerous emergency decrees and the replacement of important political offices, the Ponta government attempted to overthrow representatives of the previous ruling party, PD-L . As a result, Crin Antonescu was initially elected as the new President of the Romanian Senate at the beginning of July 2012. After the suspension of President Traian Băsescu , Antonescu was also the country's interim president until the impeachment proceedings against Băsescu failed.

As interim president, Antonescu supported Victor Ponta's political course during the state crisis that had escalated after Băsescu’s suspension . Antonescu dismissed doubts of the European Commission about the rule of law of the government's course as "exaggerated".
