Gheorghe Ciuhandu (born June 15, 1947 in Timișoara , Timiș County ) is a Romanian politician and was mayor of Timișoara from 1996 to 2012 . On June 18, 2011 he was elected to the board of the PNŢCD . From August 2004 to January 2007 he was chairman of this party.

Gheorghe Ciuhandu is the son of Professors Gheorghe and Felicia Ciuhandu. The paternal grandfather, also called Gheorghe Ciuhandu, was an Orthodox pastor, an active participant in the Great Unification , a member of the Romanian Parliament, honorary member of the Romanian Academy , and married to Anamaria George (university teacher). Gheorghe Ciuhandu is fluent in German, English and French. He is an Orthodox Christian .

Life

Gheorghe Ciuhandu attended the German-speaking Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara from 1961 to 1965 , then the Timișoara Polytechnic University from 1965 to 1970 and obtained his doctorate in construction engineering in 1986.

Gheorghe Ciuhandu was an engineer at Industriebautrust from 1970 to 1973, an engineer at the Institute for Research and Projection for Hydroelectric Equipment from 1973 to 1974, an engineer at the National Institute for Research in Construction (INCERC) from 1975 to 1976, an engineer from 1976 to 1980 and from 1980 to 1993 Scientific researcher at the Building Research and Projection Branch (ICCPDC), lecturer at the Timișoara Polytechnic University from 1993 until today. From 1994 to 1996 he was director of the Institute for Research and Expertise in Construction (INCERC). Since 1996 until today he has been Lord Mayor of the city of Timișoara. Gheorghe Ciuhandu has authored over fifty scientific papers published in Switzerland and abroad.

Gheorghe Ciuhandu has been a member of the Partidul Național Țărănesc - Creștin Democrat (PNȚCD) , the national peasant Christian Democratic Party , since 1990 , was president of PNȚCD Timișoara from 1991 to 1995, president of PNȚCD in Timiș County from 1995 to today, and vice-president of PNȚCD at national level since 2000 to August 2004, and President of PNȚCD - which was temporarily renamed Partidul Popular Creștin Democrat (PPCD, Christian Democratic People's Party) - from August 2004 to January 2007.

Gheorghe Ciuhandu was an active participant in the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 and a member of the freely elected city council (January – June 1990). He was a founding member of the Revolution Memorial Association since 1990. He was a member of the National Assembly of the Romanian Orthodox Church from 1994 to 1998, member of the board of the Intercultural Institute in Timisoara since 1996, president of the local consortium Timișoara from 1990 to 1996. He is a member of the management committee of the FMR - Federation of Large Cities in Romania since 1996 to the present day, and President of the Committee for Urban Development and Territorial Design of the FMR since 1996 to the present, as well as a founding member of the Philharmonic Society in Timișoara since 1998 and founder of the Church of the Birth of Our Lady in Timișoara since 1999.

He is Executive President of the Romanian Association Astra for the Banat, the Iron Gate and Romanians worldwide since 2000 to the present, full member of the CPLRE - CLRAE of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg , and was awarded the title of Patron of Art - for supporting and promoting the Romanian contemporary art of the Union of Fine Artists in Romania . In 2013 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .
