Josef Geml

Josef Geml , Hungarian Geml József , (born March 28, 1858 in Rekasch , Hungary ; † April 3, 1929 in Timișoara ( German  Temeswar , Hungarian Temesvár ), Romania ) was the mayor of what was then Temesvár and a local historian .

Life

Study and notary

Josef Geml attended grammar school (1868–1872) and the teacher training college in what was then Temesvár. 1877–1881 he completed his studies in political science and law in Budapest and then came to Temesvár as a notary (1881–1884) and later as a second city notary (1884–1890) and city chief notary (1890–1896) as a close associate of Karl Telbisz .

Deputy Mayor

In 1896 he was appointed deputy mayor of Temesvár. Josef Geml was considered an excellent administrative specialist and was instrumental in the redesign and modernization of the city.

Mayor of Temesvár

Josef Geml was elected mayor of Temesvár on June 15, 1914 and was the last mayor of Temesvár under Hungarian rule. After the occupation of Temesvár by Serbian troops on November 14, 1918, he remained in office. He was retired on September 4, 1919 by the Romanian administration. The office was given to Stan Vidrighin , who appointed Geml as second mayor.

Representative of the Magyarization policy

Geml was a strong advocate of the policy of Magyarization , and had a sharp argument with Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn in this regard . This correspondence was published by Guttenbrunn in his work German worries in Hungary . Geml published the municipal gazette in Hungarian on January 15, 1898 ( Városi Közlöny ).

He died on April 3, 1929 in Timișoara and was buried in the inner city cemetery.
