János Török

János Török (born September 1, 1843 in Vinga , Austrian Empire , today in the Arad district , Romania ; † September 4, 1892 in Barlangliget near Budapest , Hungary) was a lawyer , mayor of Temesvár (1876-1885) and police chief of Budapest (1885 -1892).

Studies and notary's office

Török was born on September 1, 1843 in Vinga. 1854-1862 he attended the Piarist high school in Timisoara and in June 1862 made the Abitur . From 1862–1866 he studied political science and law in Pressburg and Pest . After graduation he was first vice notary in Vinga (1866-1896), then notary assistant in Timisoara and worked from 1867 assistant in the law firm of Nándor Rieger . In 1869 he entered the service of the city of Timisoara, first as a trainee , then as a municipal senior notary (1872–1876). He worked mainly under the Lord Mayors Karl Küttel and Franz Steiner .

After the resignation of Franz Steiner (1876) he was elected mayor of Timisoara.

Police chief of Budapest

On February 23, 1885, he said goodbye to Temesvár in an extraordinary general assembly , as he had been appointed police chief to Budapest. He was later promoted to the royal ministerial council.

During the floods of Szeged (1892) he supported the city financially and also played a prominent role in the reconstruction .

On September 4, 1892, he died in his weekend home in Barlangliget. His remains were brought to Temesvár and buried in the inner-city cemetery near the central chapel . His grave is tended to this day.
