The German State Theater Timișoara (DSTT) is a publicly subsidized German-speaking professional ensemble in Timişoara ( German  Timişoara ), the capital of the Timiş district in western Romania , where German-language theater was first mentioned in 1753. The new theater was opened in 1875, but closed again in 1899 as a result of increasing Magyarization in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary . On June 27, 1953, the festive reopening of the German State Theater Timişoara (DSTT) took place. The German State Theater is located in the right wing of the National Theater and Opera building with the entrance from Strada Alba Iulia . It has a 100-seat theater hall that it shares with the Hungarian State Theater.

description

The house is a repertory theater with around 80 permanent employees with an average age of 30 years. All performances take place in German, partly with Romanian simultaneous translation, both in Timișoara and in regions with German-speaking communities. The offer ranges from classical and contemporary drama to musical pieces and children's and youth theater . There are around 5 premieres or 80 performances per season.

The DSTT is subsidized by the city of Timișoara. It also receives project funding from the Institute for Foreign Relations eV Stuttgart , the Donauschwäbische Kulturstiftung of the State of Baden-Württemberg and other public and private bodies from Germany and abroad.

In 2005 the partnership between the DSTT and the Badische Landesbühne in Bruchsal was concluded with the support of the Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Heribert Rech and the Donauschwäbische Kulturstiftung des Landes Baden-Württemberg . The exchange of productions and artists, as well as other joint projects, have already met with great approval from audiences in the Banat and Baden-Württemberg. In autumn 2009, the two companies created a co-production for the first time.

In 2009 the partnership between the German State Theater Timişoara and the Badische Landesbühne Bruchsal was supported with an amount of 20,000 euros. The funds were used on the one hand to finance a guest performance by the German State Theater Timişoara in Bruchsal, and on the other hand to finance a joint production “Goethe.Lenau.Faust - exploring a myth”. The premiere in Timisoara took place on October 2nd, 2009, the premiere in Bruchsal on February 4th, 2010. The institutionalized cooperation between the German State Theater Timişoara and the Badische Landesbühne Bruchsal gives the DSTT the chance to establish itself as a German-speaking theater in the Danube region across borders.

The DSTT is 87 percent financed by the Romanian state, 13 percent of the official budget is borne by institutions from the Federal Republic such as the State Institute for Foreign Relations and the Donauschwäbische Kulturstiftung.

history

In 1753 there were favorable conditions for a theater in Timisoara. Large numbers of civil servants and their employees from Vienna, as well as officers of the garrison from Austria and Germany, brought with them a great need for culture. Initially, traveling troops, impromptu comedians and other artists from Berlin , Vienna and Pest were committed to Timisoara. In 1757 the intention was first expressed to build a separate building for a German theater, the Komödienhaus am Domplatz . In 1758, from city funds, a theater hall was built in the building of the Serbian magistrate, which was to serve this purpose exclusively. Since 1772 there have been regular weekly events in Timisoara. The theater found its first home in 1776 in the town hall built in 1761 on the site of today's Nikolaus Lenau School on Domplatz . The interiors of the house were completely prepared for theater purposes and from then on there were regular performances. For the most part, pieces from German classics were included in the program.

The waltz king Johann Strauss has performed frequently in Timisoara, and 1796 which found premiere of The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart place there. In September 1871 the foundation stone was laid for the new Timisoara Franz-Josef-Theater , which opened on September 22nd, 1875, a building dominating the city center in the Italian Renaissance style based on the designs of the Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer .

The building of the theater housed the Grand Hotel , a large ballroom known as the Redouta , a luxurious restaurant, a coffee house and, from 1902, a summer garden. However, the theater had to be completely renovated in 1880 after a fire. As a result of the Magyarization , the formerly highly regarded German Theater in Timisoara was closed in 1899.

The Timisoara German State Theater was founded on January 1, 1953 by a decree of the Bucharest Council of Ministers as the German department of the Timisoara State Theater . On July 27, 1953, the festive opening was celebrated with the play Die Karlsschüler by Heinrich Laube .

In 1956 the house gained administrative independence under the name "German State Theater Timisoara", which it still bears today. Since it was founded, over 370 productions have been produced, the theater has played around 10,000 performances in front of around 2.5 million spectators in almost all places with a German population in Romania, as well as in the GDR, and after 1989 in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, France, Croatia and Serbia.

The theater is no longer in the main building, but in the former Redouta , with the entrance on Alba-Iulia-Straße. The representative building now characterizes the center of Timișoara and houses spoken theater in three different languages: Romanian, German and Hungarian as well as the Timişoara National Opera .
