Alexander Ternovits , pseudonym: Buju Ternovits , stage name: Josefstädter Franzi (born April 11, 1929 in Lugoj , Kingdom of Romania ) is a former actor at the Romanian National Theater "Mihai Eminescu" , the Romanian Opera Timișoara , the German State Theater Timişoara and the Hungarian State Theater "Csiky Gergely" in Timișoara . Alexander Ternovits had numerous appearances on Romanian television, starred in several Romanian films and brought out some publications. In 2007 he was made an honorary citizen of Timișoara .

Alexander Ternovits was born in Lugoj in 1929 as the son of the architect Josef Ternovits and Maria Humayer. He completed elementary school in his hometown, where he also attended the Lyceum from 1939 to 1943. From 1945 to 1948 he was a student at the Piarist High School in Timișoara , where he graduated from high school. He then completed a degree in agricultural sciences at the Agronomy Faculty of the Timișoara Polytechnic University (today Agricultural and Veterinary University of the Banat ), where he graduated in 1953 as a graduate engineer . He began his professional career as an oenologist in the Recaș wine region . As a teenager, he achieved several national records as a top athlete in athletics.

In 1957 Ternovits successfully took part in a casting at the German State Theater Timişoara and was part of its ensemble until 1960. Here the film director Francisc Munteanu noticed him and cast him for the film “Lada cu zestre”. He then got a permanent position at the Romanian State Theater "Mihai Eminescu", but also played as a guest actor at the German State Theater, the Hungarian State Theater "Csiky Gergely" and the Romanian Opera.

At the Deutsches Staatstheater Timisoara he appeared in classical plays such as Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris and Schiller's Robber . He was particularly well received in his role as Franzi from Josefstadt , which he based on the publications of Heinrich Büchelbauer . After the First World War and until the German ethnic group in Romania (DViR) came to power, Büchelbauer invented a popular swaying figure named Josefstädter Franzi in the Banater Zeitung . The swaying situations that Ternovits located in the Timișoara district of Iosefin were appreciated by the audience that was still quite numerous at the time.

As an actor, Ternovits was particularly successful at the Romanian National Theater. It was here that he was first noticed in 1964 when he became the audience favorite in Jan Drda's comedy “The Forgotten Devil”. He staged the same play together with Horst Strasser at the German State Theater. He was particularly well received in the Romanian media.

In 1987 he left for Germany. Here he settled in Munich, where he kept his head above water as a translator, but could no longer gain a foothold in his profession as an actor. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989 he began a commuter life between his old and new homeland. In 2000 he appeared again at the German State Theater Timişoara. Further appearances at the Romanian State Theater followed.

In the period from 1992 to 2005 he appeared in the play "One man show - Josefstädter Franzi", in which he played the main role, directed and was responsible for the production. The piece was performed in German as well as in Hungarian and Romanian on a tour in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Romania.

Alexander Ternovits appeared in more than 250 variety shows on Romanian television, mainly in Romanian but also on programs in German and Hungarian. He also played in several Romanian films.

On March 31, 2006, on behalf of Romania's President Traian Băsescu, he received the Order of "Cultural Merit" in the rank of "Commander" of the "Acting Arts" division for the "promotion and implementation" of a new style of expression in the art of theater ", a style called Ternovits has shown on the most important Romanian and a number of foreign stages.

In 2006 he was proposed by Ioan Holender , then director of the Vienna State Opera , for the honor of being an honorary citizen of the city of Timișoara . The ceremony took place on January 30, 2007.

As an informal employee of the Securitate , Alexander Ternovits is said to have labeled the poet Franz Grass from Tomnatic , who committed suicide in 1975, "a criminal" under the code name "Matei" .
