The Piaristengymnasium ( Romanian Liceul Piarist din Timișoara ) was until its expropriation in 1948 a higher educational institution in the western Romanian city of Timișoara led by the Piarist Order . In 1992 the church school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Timișoara with the name Gerhardinum was opened here.

history

The teaching order, founded by the Spaniard José Calasanz in Rome at the beginning of the 17th century , had set itself the goal of offering a school , the scholae piae pauperus , even to the poorest students of all ethnicities and denominations . The Piarists were about the 18th century from the mid advice Jakob Bibich to be good in the municipality Sankt Anna ( Romanian Sântana , Arad county ) in the Diocese of Csanád been appointed to one here middle school to start with initially three classes. The founders were the Bulgarians , however, the multilingual taught Fathers from the start in all languages of the kuk -Imperiums, a revolutionary of the 18th century teaching method. By 1778, 17,000 students from the area attended the school. In 1788, however, the school had to close due to the low number of students. After a decree by Emperor Josef II , the order settled in what was then Timisoara , initially in the monastery of the forbidden Jesuits , and in a short time expanded the school to a high school with eight classes.

Initially, the language of instruction was Latin for a short time , after which the German language was introduced by decree of Josef II . From the middle of the 19th century until the end of the First World War , teaching was in Hungarian (see also: Magyarization ) , and from the 1920s in Romanian (see also: Treaty of Trianon ) . The school was open to all students regardless of their nationality or religion. In 1870 the grammar school had 417 students, 227 of whom belonged to the Roman Catholic and 135 to the Orthodox denomination, 35 were of the Israelite faith, ten were Lutherans and four were Reformed .

1908–1909 Alexander Baumgarten , Arnold Merbl and László Székely built a new building complex including classrooms, student dormitory , Konvikt and the Piarist Church of the Holy Cross on a large area on the opposite side of Parcul Central in the city center. The interior frescoes were created by Joszef Ferenczy . The school developed into a Banat elite school , so the school was attended by students from the entire Banat region, but also from Serbia , Slovenia , Galicia and Muntenia (for example sons of the noble Bibescu family ). Up until 1918, 46,000 students were taught here.

During the Second World War , a German military hospital was set up in the school . After the war, the communist regime banned the Piarists from teaching . The school building was expropriated and given to the Polytechnic University for use.

After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , the Timișoara diocese claimed the building and set up the Gerhardinum , the Roman Catholic Lyceum of St. Gérard , named after the first bishop and patron of the diocese . Péter Szabó was appointed director in 1992. However, lessons were initially resumed in Strada Abrud in the Fabric district ( German  factory town ) with only 20 students from the first Romanian and Hungarian classes. In 1995 the lyceum was able to move to the first floor of the old Piaristenkonvikt, but only took possession of the second floor in 2000. The final handover of the complex in urgent need of renovation took place in 2006; In this year a boarding school with 80 places was set up. In 2009 around 150 students were taught by 30 teachers.
