Balthasar Waitz (born August 18, 1950 in Nițchidorf , Timiș County , People's Republic of Romania ) is a Romanian-German journalist , writer , poet and translator from Romanian.

Live and act

Balthasar Waitz was born in 1950 as a Banat Schwabe in Nițchdorf, where he attended the same German village school as the Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller . After his parents moved to Reșița , he finished primary school here and then graduated from the “German Theoretical Lyceum Reșița”. He then began studying German and Romanian at the Faculty of Philology at the Western University of Timișoara , which he successfully completed in 1974 with a diploma.

Waitz began his professional career as a German teacher at the “Industrielyzeum Nr. 1” in Reșița (1974–1979). In 1979 he moved to the Neue Banater Zeitung , where he worked as an editor until 1990.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Balthasar Waitz, like Herta Müller, was a member of the Adam Müller Guttenbrunn literary circle, which was founded by the editor-in-chief of the Neue Banater Zeitung Nikolaus Berwanger . Nikolaus Berwanger died in the spring of 1989. The writer and art historian Annemarie Podlipny-Hehn founded the literary circle Stafette after 1990, which can be seen as the successor to the former Adam Müller Guttenbrunn literary circle. The Timisoara branch of the Romanian Writers' Association has been awarding the Berwanger Prize for Banat German authors for years . In 2011 the award went to Balthasar Waitz.

Balthasar Waitz is one of the few Romanian German literary writers who stayed in Romania and did not emigrate to the Federal Republic of Germany. After the political upheaval of 1989/1990, he worked first as editor of the magazine Neue Literatur (1991–1991) and then of the Neue Weg (1991–1992) in Bucharest . In 1993 he returned to Timișoara, where he worked as a freelance writer and publicist until 2006. Waitz has been editor of the Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung for Romania in Timișoara since 2006 .
