The Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania (DFDR, Romanian : Forumul Democrat al Germanilor din România (FDGR) ) is the association of Romanian Germans . Its charitable status is recognized by Government Decree 599 of June 4, 2008. The DFDR was founded during the revolution days at the end of 1989. On the basis of party legislation, the association is entitled to take part in political life in Romania and to nominate candidates in local and parliamentary elections.

All 20 nationally recognized ethnic minorities in Romania have a representative in the Chamber of Deputies due to the minority-friendly Romanian electoral legislation . The prerequisite is that the minority organization takes part in the elections and achieves a legally prescribed minimum number of votes.

Mandates in municipalities

The DFDR has participated in all elections since the political change in Romania in 1989, and has gained significantly in relevance on the local political level since 2000. In Sibiu it has been the mayor since 2000 and in 2004 received 60.43% of the vote for the city council. From 2004 to 2008 the DFDR provided further mayors in the cities of Mediasch and Heltau (district of Hermannstadt / Sibiu) as well as in several villages in the district of Sathmar , in the elections in 2008 the DFDR representatives obtained mayor mandates in Heltau and Freck (district of Hermannstadt), 7 seats in communities in the district of Sathmar and one in a community in the district of Karasch-Severin . In the district of Sibiu (with around 425,000 inhabitants) the DFDR provided the chairman of the district council from 2004 to 2012 and the strongest parliamentary group from 2004 to 2008 with 11 of the 33 seats. The German minority only makes up 1 percent of the district's population.

Local election results 2012

In the local elections on June 10, 2012, the DFDR won nine mayoral seats. Klaus Johannis was elected to a fourth term in Sibiu with 77.9% of the votes , the DFDR obtained 15 of 23 city council seats and thus again the absolute majority. Arnold Klingeis was elected for a second term in Freck / Avrig . In the district of Sathmar , seven forum candidates were elected mayors: Mihai Löchli in Schamagosch / Ciumeşti , Imre Sütö in Kalmandi / Cămin, Gheorghe-Otto Marchi in Petrifeld / Petreşti , Gabor Fezer in Terem / Tiream, Ioan Zoltan Kardosi in Stanislau / Sanislău in Schinal / Urziceni and Gheorghe-Nicolae Gyákon in Turterebesch / Turulung . At the district level, the DFDR won nine mandates in the Hermannstadt / Sibiu district and two in the Kronstadt / Brașov district .

City and community councils were elected a total of 72 representatives of the DFDR. In addition to the 15 city councils in Sibiu, there were two city council seats in Kronstadt for the first time, and DFDR provided municipal councils in the districts of Sibiu, Kronstadt, Sathmar, Temesch , Karasch-Severin and Bihar.

Local election results 2016

In the local elections on June 5, 2016, the DFDR won five mayoral seats. Astrid Fodor was elected mayor of Sibiu, in the Sathmar district Imre Sütö (Kalmandi), Ioan Zoltan Kardosi (Stanislau), Iosif Mellau (Schinal) and Gheorghe Gyakon (Turterebesch) remained in office for another mandate. The DFDR also provides 7 vice mayors (2 in the Sibiu district and 5 in the Sathmar district). The DFDR is represented in the administrative districts by a deputy chairwoman of the district council - Christine Manta-Klemens in Sibiu - and ten councils (8 in the district council of Sibiu and 2 in the district council of Kronstadt). The DFDR achieved 25 city council mandates, most of them (12) again in Sibiu, more in the Arad district in Sanktanna (1), in the Sibiu district in Freck (3) and Heltau (1), in the Kronstadt district in the city of Kronstadt (2) as well as in Fogarasch (3) and Reps (1) as well as in the Temesch district in Busiasch and Detta (1 mandate each). The 56 municipal councils of the DFDR were elected in the districts of Sathmar (45), Kronstadt (7), Temesch (2), Bihar (1) and Hermannstadt (1).
