Ovidiu Ganț

Ovidiu Victor Ganț (born August 18, 1966 in Deta , Timiș District , Socialist Republic of Romania ) is a Romanian-German politician of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania (DFDR). He belongs to the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians .

Life

After various positions as a teacher in the Banat , including as headmaster of the Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara from 1992 to 2001 , Ganț held the post of undersecretary of state in the department for interethnic relations of the Romanian government from 2001 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008 he was vice-chairman of the Banat organization of the DFDR, since 2004 he has been a member of the Romanian parliament and belongs to the parliamentary group of national and ethnic minorities.

From 2005 to 2006 Ganț was a member of the Romanian observer delegation in the European Parliament . After Romania's accession to the European Union , he was in 2007 a member of the European Parliament and belonged to the Group EPP-ED on. As an MEP he was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education .

In February 2017, he resigned as deputy chairman of the minority group in protest at the easing of the Romanian anti-corruption regime.
