history

Nikolaus Lenau Lyzeum, around 1910 (then Realgymnasium)

The two-story classicist building designed by the architect Heinrich Baader and built by the civil engineer Johann Reiber was initially a town hall in 1761 , then a forerunner of the German State Theater Timişoara with German classics on the program. The waltz king Johann Strauss has performed here several times, and 1796 which found premiere of The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart place there.

In a climate of self-confident bourgeoisie, the call for a fully developed higher education institution was loud. After seven years of renovation of the building, the Staatsoberrealschule moved in in 1879 , and from 1870 to 1878 it was housed in the building of the city's citizens' hospital . With the completion of the ballroom in 1882, construction work on the school was completed.

The main focus of the curriculum was analytical geometry , physics , chemistry , natural history and drawing . Initially the language of instruction was German, later Hungarian with explanations in German. The Lenau scholarship was awarded annually between 1875 and 1919 .

After the Banat was divided into three in 1919 and renamed from Oberrealschule to Deutsches Staatsgymnasium , German was introduced as the language of instruction, with a Hungarian section until 1927.

In 1925, the idea of the Banat student Karl Becker to form a boy scout group found enthusiastic supporters among the older students at the school. At the end of 1935 the group had to split up due to political pressure. From 1942 to 1944 the German Girls' High School and the Teachers Training Institute were housed in the school building at Str. Gheorghe-Lazãr Strasse 2 .

German teaching was initially discontinued under communist rule. Between 1944 and 1948, the denominational schools remained in operation until they were nationalized in 1948. The same thing happened with the two German-speaking teacher training institutes in the Banat. In 1959, numerous German schools were no longer independent; they only continued to exist as departments of Romanian schools, with the exception of three higher schools, including the Nikolaus-Lenau-Gymnasium under its own management.

The German Lyceum was after the Second World War, first in the building of the CD Loga Lyceum and again in 1955 in the old building in the Str. Gheorghe Lazar Street 2 accommodated. In 1942, the secondary school , temporarily housed in the Banatia building , the building of today's Medical and Pharmaceutical University Victor Babes , was given the name Nikolaus Lenau Lyzeum , which it still bears today, except for a short interruption. On May 26, 1957, the school was renamed Nikolaus Lenau Lyzeum again, which was confirmed by decree in 1970 for the centenary of the school .

In the autumn of 1968, the then director of the Nikolaus Lenau School, Erich Pfaff , founded the German adult education center in Timișoara. As a founder, he was also the head and main speaker of this adult education institution. The lectures initially took place monthly, then bi-weekly and later weekly in the ballroom of the lyceum. The Lenau Lyceum and the adult education center were important meeting places for the German population in and around Timișoara. It was a school that was always open to all generations. On February 20, 1969 the Schubert Choir Timişoara was founded. From 1992 to 2001 Ovidiu Ganț was the headmaster of the lyceum. The current headmistress is Elena Wolf (also city councilor until 2012).

Today the Nikolaus Lenau Lyzeum is the most important German-speaking school in the Banat .

"Lenau German"

The majority of students today come from Romanian-speaking families who view German as a foreign language. However, the German school language is an important part of the German minority language in Timișoara. The German language of instruction at the Nikolaus-Lenau-Schule is not identical to Standard German due to specific language changes , although the aim of German instruction is bilingualism. A school-typical second language has emerged, which is known in research under the term Lenau German .

Lenau German is “a school discourse that interferes with Romanian”, the vocabulary of which is used by a socially clearly defined group in a specific situation. This language is in the common habitat of the school not only in about 2000 students, but also, with certain restrictions at about 100 teachers in use, wherein, in the group, the teacher despite the basis of the so-called firm language as a default language , a considerable clearance between speech Purismus one and Laissez-faire attitude can be observed.

Traditions

Traditions at the school are the math competition in German, schoolchildren's Olympics , Schratzenball , Faschingsball , Maturaball , Singing-sounding Lenau School , volunteer services in various organizations, and the Christmas market.

building

In April 2008 the school management notified the town hall and the fire brigade about the dangerous crumbling of the plaster inside and outside the school building. Since they did not take any further action, two chairs connected by a red ribbon were placed in front of the building to warn passers-by of the risk of accidents.

For the renovation of the Nikolaus-Lenau-Schule, part of the money requested for years was transferred from the state budget in 2008 to the account of the district school authority. The redevelopment draft for the ground floor and the first two floors had already been completed, now the planning for the construction of an attic followed. According to the headmistress Elena Wolf , the work should start after the 2008 school year is over.

In the course of the restitution of school buildings to the Roman Catholic Church, part of the lyceum, the "small Nikolaus Lenau School", as well as other schools in the city, will have to vacate their buildings soon. A new school building is to be built on Plavosin Street near the Circumvalatiunii district.

After some delays, construction work began on the facade and roof of the building in March 2013. A total of 700,000 euros will be used to refurbish the school. They consist of funds that the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau from Frankfurt am Main made available as a loan. A time of eight months was estimated for the construction work.

Association of Friends of the Lena School Timisoara eV

In July 2008 the Association of Friends of the Lenau School Temeswar eV was founded in Hockenheim . The registered office and place of entry is Rastatt . The former headmaster Erich Pfaff was honorary chairman of the association. The purpose of the association is the non-material and material promotion of German-language education and upbringing at public schools in Romania, primarily at the Nikolaus-Lenau-Lyceum from Timisoara / Romania, the promotion and communication of the European idea and international understanding by supporting the exchange of students and teachers at German-speaking schools in Romania with students and teachers at schools in Germany.

Around 400 former students attended the school meeting organized by the association on November 7, 2009 in Neusäß near Augsburg. The television broadcaster TVR from Timișoara broadcast a 90-minute magazine report on December 6, 2009 about the event and its participants. In June 2010 the next meeting took place in Timisoara at the invitation of the school.
