Cultural attaché

A cultural attaché (female form: cultural attachée ) is an attaché of a diplomatic mission who is responsible for cultural matters . In diplomacy, an attaché is the companion of an envoy . This companion is a member of an embassy and is responsible for z. B. exhibitions, promotion of his language abroad, supervision of schools and universities in the host country.

In the German foreign service , the person responsible for culture is not called a cultural attaché, but a cultural advisor. The term cultural attaché itself is a direct borrowing from English and French.

There is a myth from the Cold War that the title of cultural attaché is often used as a cover for intelligence officials who are supposed to be given diplomatic immunity .
