life and work

Franz Waschek attended school in Temesvár and received his diploma as a choir director in 1918 . He then worked as a cantor teacher in Deschanfalva and Majláthfalva . In 1924 he received a certificate for church musicians at the teacher training institute in Timișoara after passing the exam. In the subject of organ playing , his teacher was the then cathedral music director Desiderius Jarosy .

From 1925 Waschek worked in Timișoara, including from 1929 as choirmaster of the Katharinenkirche in the district of Cetate , organist at the Cathedral of Timișoara , director of the Cecilia choir and the Hungarian song circle Magyar Dalkör in the district of Fratelia .

Franz Waschek originally wanted to emigrate to the United States to improve his living conditions . Despite advanced preparations, however, he did not move, instead Waschek stayed with his family in Timișoara. His time as the conductor of the Timişoara- Mehalaer Liederkranz , founded in 1912 and which by 1932 consisted of over 70 active members, was particularly successful for him . In 1928 he was given a baton with silver fittings for his services to this choir.

Waschek composed Hungarian and German choirs and songs as well as an Ave Maria . However, almost all of his works were lost.

Waschek also left a collection of mostly Hungarian, Romanian and German Banat folk songs from 1914. Singing festivals, pilgrimages and singing trips to neighboring parishes made singing in the church choir interesting and varied. In September 1930, the inner-city church choir led by Waschek also sang Sunday mass in the community of Dudeştii Noi .

After the Second World War Waschek worked as a music teacher in the Hungarian department of the Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara. He died in January 1961 and found his final resting place in the Fratelia cemetery in Timișoara.
