Johann Nepomuk Vogl (born February 7, 1802 in Vienna ; † November 16, 1866 there ) was an Austrian writer , poet and publicist .

Life

Very little is known about his life. He mainly wrote poems , ballads , dramas , novels and essays . The number of his (inventoried) works is in the hundreds. In addition, he published several almanacs and paperbacks , including the Austrian Wunderhorn (from 1834) and the Austrian Folk Calendar .

Vogl was a member of the group of writers that gathered in the Viennese coffee house Silver Coffee House.

Mainly his numerous ballads can be assigned to the Viennese late romanticism . Many of these ballads were later set to music, including by Carl Loewe , Franz von Suppè as well as Carl Gottfried Salzmann and Franz Schubert .

He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 0, row 1, number 6). In 1894 the Johann-Nepomuk-Vogl-Platz in Vienna- Währing (18th district) was named after him.

Trivia

Vogl's poem "Alpenunschuld" has the phrase "Auf da Oalm there is sin!" back.
